SMPC builds houses for new employees
SMPC is the only power producer in the country that owns and mines its own fuel source (coal), which allows it to generate reliable, affordable energy for the Luzon and Visayas grids.
INTEGRATED energy company Semirara and Mining Power Corporation (SMPC)is spending around P100 million to build 200 houses for its new cadet engineers and foremen based in Semirara Island, Antique Province.
The cadet engineers and foremen are among the 387 additional personnel hired by SMPC during the first half of the year. The mass hiring is in line with the company’s mine expansion plan for the next two to three years.
“Since May last year, we have turned over 84 houses to our employees. With the additional workers we hired, we expect to complete the remaining 116 units by the end of the year,” said SMPC President and Chief Operating Officer Victor A. Consunji.
There are currently 185 people working full time on the construction of the houses. Almost all of the construction workers are from Semirara Island, Mindoro and Iloilo.
To date, SMPC has constructed nearly 1,500 housing units for its employees. Each house has a total floor area of 43 square meters and over 250 square meters of available land for backyard vegetable gardening.
SMPC plans to turnover at least 25 new houses every month to its newly hired mine site employees.
Aside from providing temporary housing facilities in the island, SMPC also extends power and water subsidies to its mine site employees. Qualified dependents of employees also have access to free basic education (K-12) and vocational training. Primary medical and dental services are also provided free of charge to mine site workers and their dependents.
