Unong Mine rehabilitation
Unong Mine in Barangay Tinogboc was Semirara Island’s first open pit coal operations. It produced 12 million metric tons of coal in 1983 until 2000.
More than a decade since it closed, the mine area now has a lake that hosts meter-long eels, tilapia, and even some hawkbill sea turtles released in its brackish waters in 2011. The rim has become a wide band of green trees that line a three (3) -kilometer circumferential road. The company plans to develop the area as a place for recreation for island residents. Currently, the roads around the lake are enjoyed by bikers and weekend strollers, and a 1.1-kilometer zipline has been installed.
In 2014, the company started to develop land areas around the lake to plant Florida napier (Pennisetum purpureum), Pakchong 1 napier (cross of Pennisetum purpureum and Pennisetum glaucum), and star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis) to support a dairy farm in the next one or two years. The dairy farm aims to produce enough milk to augment food and nutrition needs of children on the island.
